Workshops

Today, college essays have become one of the most influential components of the application process. They are your opportunity to show admissions who you are beyond scores, grades and activities. We offer three one-day workshops: the Main Essay Workshop, the Common Application, and a new Additional Essays Workshop.

These workshops are designed to help you write essays that will set you apart and reflect your individuality. We encourage students to participate in these workshops in this order; all workshops are offered in-person and virtually. Each class will be team-taught by two of our team members: Alison Forbes, M.Ed, Molly Morrow, and Mary Alex Staude, MS.Ed, with small group instruction followed by one-on-one conferencing.

Writing the Main Essay

Your personal essay not only showcases your writing skills, but also reflects your values and personality. Impactful essays hook the reader and reveal something new about the author. Set yourself apart by writing a unique and personal essay that will draw the reader out of their chair.

We help students identify their target audience, generate topics, and write focused drafts. The morning is dedicated to examining successful essays, teaching writing techniques, and selecting effective topics. The afternoon is designed for extended writing time along with individual conferencing with each student. One week of follow-up editing is included in workshop registration.

Common Application

Most students apply to most of their colleges via the Common Application. We will teach you the hidden tips to take advantage of every single space in this application, including the Activities List. Maximize the impact of your Activities Page to show a college what you have to contribute to the community in and outside the classroom.

Students will complete their entire Common Application during this workshop, with individual support throughout the day. The workshop’s focus is on assisting students as they write strategic descriptions of their honors, courses, and activities to convey thematic extracurricular commitment.

Supplemental Essays

Supplement essays complement your main essay and contribute new additional information about you. In this final workshop, we help students decode Supplemental Essay prompts, organize an itemized worklist with personalized deadlines, and find new facets to highlight key accomplishments and attributes.

The morning is spent finding and organizing a student’s individual list of supplement essays and teaching students how to write elastic essays that can work with many supplement prompts. The afternoon is designed to offer extensive writing time and editing assistance to draft the numerous supplemental essays.
